A Fond Farewell to a Great Actor and a Family Friend
It is with great sadness today that we learnt of the death of Corin Redgrave. He was one of the great actors of his generation and was a dear, dear friend to the theatres. He returned to Liverpool to great critical acclaim in January 2004, playing Archie Rice in a revival of John Osbourne’s The Entertainer at the Playhouse.
The Playhouse was of particular significance to the Redgrave family, as it was where Corin’s parents first met. Michael Redgrave and Rachel Kempson met as part of the Liverpool Repertory Company at the Playhouse in the 1930s and a great acting dynasty was born.
While here in 2004, Corin re-opened The Redgrave Room at the Playhouse as a tribute to his family and a great reminder of this remarkable family and their place in theatrical history. At that opening he spoke to the press of his great love of Liverpool and his belief in the power of great art to change the quality of life and reputation of a city.
No one who met Corin will forget his humanity, kindness and strong egalitarianism. He was very much a gentleman and he will be missed sorely by all those of us who knew him.
There’s too much for us to write and say about him and some people have done it so much better, so please follow the links below if you’d like to read more…
