Dazzling Canary opens at Playhouse
26th April 2010
Saturday night saw the opening night of Canary at the Playhouse, giving audiences their first chance to see Jonathan Harvey’s daring new play.
The ensemble cast flew triumphantly through the first performance portraying characters ranging from Margaret Thatcher to a miner, Mary Whitehouse and a gay Saturday night TV entertainer.
Spanning three generations Canary** is a tragic, comic and surreal exploration of the changing attitudes towards homosexuality set against the changing backdrop of modern Britain from 1960s to the present that will make you laugh and cry in equal measure.
Canary sees Harvey return to the Playhouse where he staged his first play, The Cherry Blossom Tree, 23 years ago.
BAFTA Award-winner Hettie Macdonald directs a cast that includes Paula Wilcox, Philip Voss, Sean Gallagher, Philip McGinley, Kevin Trainor, Jodie McNee, Ben Allen and Ryan Sampson at the Playhouse until 15 May.
