My first Anthology adventure

Last night I ‘popped my Anthology cherry’ so to speak and quite frankly, I’d recommend the experience.
Having been working on the Unbound season for so long and trying to tread a very careful line with Anthology… how do we describe it? How do we not give away too much of the experience yet say enough to get audiences to book? It’s been a conundrum and having had my first Anthology experience last night, I think its best described as “a personal story journey”.
Arriving in the Everyman foyer last night, there was a palpable sense of excitement and anticipation in the air as audiences thronged around not just the ticket desk, but also a headphone collection point. As well as headphones I was presented with a torch, while I saw others collecting milk bottles and feathers amongst other items. Whatever was to happen?
I won’t give too much away, but after a short stay in the auditorium I followed an anxious young woman clutching a torch, who took me and my fellow travellers up and along Hope Street, her story unfolding in my headphones as we walked. We stopped at Liverpool Cathedral and as she drew us down to the graveyards of St James’, the stories of the dead echoed in my headphones as melancholic choral music descended as if from angels upon high. To say that this was simply an atmospheric and poetic story played out in a graveyard is to underplay a very extraordinary experience. Later, as a ‘Policeman and his dog’ escorted us back to the Everyman I couldn’t help but think about what other stories lay untold in that graveyard and along Hope Street… maybe I’ll find out on another Anthology trip…
